01/30/13 e-mail to NJT Director Weinstein from NJ-ARP Treasurer Len Resto

Subject: Closed Car Doors

Hello, Mr. Weinstein,

I hope you are doing well.

As you know, I am a daily commuter on the M&E; my station stop is Chatham.  In the morning, I take the 6:25 AM express to Penn Station.  That train has an attentive and courteous crew.

My evening train is usually the 6:21 PM departure-train 6655.  The train is generally around track 11. I board from the 7th Ave side of the station. Upon coming down the stairs to the platform, the doors to what would be the last 3 coaches are always closed. One has to board the 4th car & then walk back through the cars to reach the quiet car. It angers passengers who must run along the platform in order to double back within the coaches. Why are the doors to the last 3 cars of train 6655 always closed?

Thank you,
Len Resto

Mr. Resto,

Thanks for letting me know about this situation.  I discussed with our rail GM and he informed me that the doors on the last car of the train is not open for boarding because of concerns about dangerous congestion around the escalator. However, only the last car should be closed under the protocol.  We will have supervisors monitor the situation to assure that all but the last car will be open for boarding.  Hopefully, this will alleviate the aggravation and make the boarding more convenient for you and our other customers. Again, thanks for letting me know and if you don't see the situation change as described above please get back to me.

Regards,
Jim Weinstein
